Spring Planting Alternatives

What can I plant if I missed my corn window or had hail damage early? This is a big question we hear at RSS every year. We understand your sense of loss and empathize; but, moving on, now is the time to determine what your best alternatives are. Our first recommendation is Forage Sorghum. This single cut option can produce good tons if you’re growing it for silage. We provide two additional options that have high quality feed values for milking cows.

A second recommendation is a Sorghum Sudan grass. This multiple cut option will give you plenty of tons. The downfall is that it’s not as desirable for a dairy but it can be really good for a heifer feed lot or for a beef cow operation.

These three product options provide excellent alternatives after a stressful event. Good luck in 2020.

First Cutting On Alfalfa

Did your first cutting not perform to the level it should have? Did you see the heat and dryness affect your cutting yield? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then we can help you.

Alpha Joule will help with stress mitigation by cooling it down and blocking enzymes that shut down growth. Some benefits include: phosphate solubilization through microbial activity, reduced ethylene production (associated with aging, flowering and senescence), pH regulation, reduced reactive oxygen species, and general stress mitigation. This can give you options to see 11% yield increases and possible protein increases. Call us today to discuss applications and timing. Let’s improve your cutting yields today.

Product Spotlight: Crown FX

If fall growth on your small grains has been a problem in years past we have a solution to help you. Crown FX gives you increased tillering and early fall vigor of those plants. When you see stronger growth early with this seed treatment you will see big benefits during harvest time.

Got Microbes?

A healthy garden starts with healthy soil and a healthy soil has an abundance of microbes. In fact, soil would not exist without microbes.

So what is a microbe? A single-celled living microscopic organism that are at the foundation to living. Bacteria, Archaea, Eukaryotes and Fungi are the most commonly referred to microbes. Microbes work with plant roots to obtain nutrients from the soil for growth and help against disease causing microbes. Microbes are what breaks down plant matter and other soil materials thus improving your soil.

Got Organic Matter?

Many times we think of organic matter as the plant and animal residues we incorporate into the soil. We see a pile of leaves, manure, or plant parts and say, “wow I am adding organic matter to my soil”. Well I am sorry to say organic material is not organic matter. Organic material is anything that was alive and is no in or on the soil. For it to become matter it must decompose. Ok so how do we promote matter over material. Again, we are back to microbes. Soil microbes also make organic matter.

So how do I promote organic matter and get microbes into my soils? OrganoSCAPE Compost

Product Spotlight: PB 8133

This is a new 111-day product that is a pioneer female crossed with a Syngenta male. It has great early vigor with upright leaves. It also has a nice flex ear and does well across multiple soil types. This hybrid can be planted at 30,000-36,000 population with no problems. The thing we like best about this product is its silage yield and quality. PB 8133 also has very affordable trait fees so in these tough times you are getting the highest quality product at reasonable prices. For our dairyman out there, we saw 27 plus tons with this product and 3,600 lbs. of milk per ton with this product planted at a population of 30,000 in our plots last year. We are very excited for this product to really standout in the years to come.

Spring Planting

Spring is here and it’s time for another chance to plant our crops and see what mother nature gives us for harvest this year. I want to talk about the timing and strategies of spring planting. I love spring planting as it is moist and such a positive time of the year as the weather warms up and the land turns green and beautiful. It becomes a great opportunity to see our dreams come true.

Temperature. Oh, how we fight this problem every year. Our corn needs to get off on the right foot. If we plant in wet, cold conditions, we can see some major problems. The ideal soil temperature for corn germination is between 55 to 60 degrees. According to the K-State Extension corn production handbook, “Corn emergence at 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit may take 18 to 21 days, while at 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit, corn emerges in 8 to 10 days. Below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, little, if any, germination can be expected.”

The corn crops decide yield potential very early in their life. The V2 to V4 growth stage is one of the most important times for your corn crop. Too wet soil or too dry can rob yield and hurt plant germination. We want to protect our investment and give it the best chance to bring us a great yield.

For our feed crops, as in forage sorghums we need to be patient and wait for 60 degree plus temps. I like to see this start late to mid-May or even June. If we rush, seed rot and bugs will destroy any crop we may have.

The last thing I will bring up is fertilizer for our crops. We need to be vigilant to give it a great start, but I like a slow feeding process and most crops take up majority of their nutrients later in the year. Spoon feed it and pull tissue samples to see what it is wanting. If you are looking for products that can boost yield and help lighten the fertilizer bill we have solutions to help you.

Product Spotlight: alphajoule

Are you looking for a product that can increase yield by 11% or more? What about crude protein increases up to 3%? Alpha Joule is a product that can do this and more. This is a great microorganism that will increase leaf numbers per stem and increase stem count. You will see larger leaf surface and healthier plants when applied to your alpha crop after each cutting. This product helps with stress mitigation in your fields. Are you ready for more tons?

Spring Fertilization Questions

Spring planting is just about here. Are you ready to give your crops the best chance to get going?

There are many ways to do spring fertilizers and a ton of products to choose from. Let’s dive in and see where we need to start.

First, I like to have soil samples pulled. This step is crucial to help decide on the products and steps that proceed. A good relative sample will give you a base to go off of and help in the steps to come.

Second, is to look at the options of product and placement.

Are we doing a preseason broadcast application of dry fertilizer? This is a great way to apply nitrogen in higher quantity.

Do we do a strip-till program? This is a great way to put liquid fertilizer below the soil surface and prepare a seed bed for upcoming planting.

Do you apply a pop-up fertilizer in furrow with your planter? This is a great way to feed the crop right at germination and for a few weeks.

Are we doing a post emergence fertilizer program? This is good for applying nitrogen to your growing crop.

Where is your crop getting its nutrients from for the season? I believe you need a plan to make the most of your crop.

In conclusion there is no bad way to do a spring fertilizer application other than not doing one! I am willing to help anyone with ideas and bring solutions to your farm for fertilizer and or chemical. I know there are more options, but I believe these are the most commonly used practices. Good luck this spring on your crops and may mother nature bless you with a beautiful harvest.

Product Spotlight: IONfx Multicrop

IONfx contains all naturally derived microorganisms. It may be used as a seed coating or foliar applied to growing forage plants making it easy to apply and readily adaptable to your forage growing operation. It will give you a new tool to produce higher quality and higher yielding forages for your operation. IONfx has been proven in many different forage applications including wheat, rye grass, timothy grass, triticale, and corn silage. In corn silage trials, we have seen as much as 2.5 ton increase in yield with 5% better digestibility. On a wheat field that was baled for forage we saw 46% more bales where IONfx was used. IONfx promotes an increase in shoot tillering, leaf surface area and overall biomass of the growing plant, which results in an increase of carbohydrates and protein resulting in higher quality and better yields. Give IONfx a try in your operation, it will be a true profit maker for all of your forage.
